It's pretty fucking hard. You Spaniards have a really hard time with distinguishing "á" from "â" and the same thing for all the other vowels, so it's very unlikely you'd be fluent any time soon. It's a very beautiful language, though, and not as grating as Spanish to foreigners (and Portuguese, my god you guys sound retarded to us)
Grammar is also a bitch, but it's not too different from Castilian.

Wherever there's a region of the world that speaks Portuguese, there are heaps of Spaniards right next door, and since your language is easier and your numbers are greater, there's usually no practical reason to learn the harder, least spoken language.
It's worth learning it just for the literature, though. Even Cervantes recognised this. But most of it requires you to have a very high degree of comprehension.

Portugal actually helped us a lot in the war, though they remained officially neutral after a discussion between them and ourselves. We decided that Portugal should stay out of it for their own benefit, but they did permit us to use some of their strategic bases.
I'm not too sure about the Brazil stuff, that's a bit of history I'm rather fuzzy on.
In WWI Portugal wanted to stay neutral, but also wished to help us. This resulted in them getting into a handful of fights, either one their own or alongside us. While they didn't really provide much in the way of combat support they once again permitted us to use their bases.

But, if we had done that we would be cut from access to our african colonies because Britain dominated the seas. Salazar would never do that, he knew we needed the colonies and didn't want to break the Alliance either way.
