My belief was that many of the holocaust camps were originally used to house Jews that they couldn't oust before the war. Tons of Jews were infested with lice and Typhus and had to be shaved and all. I'm sure some were used as human cattle, some were beaten. Some executed. But I don't believe that they were much different than Union pow camps and no where near as bad as Soviet gulags.
