Phantom of the Paradise is maximum overkino. Paul Williams' music alone makes it a top tier movie. I also love all of De Palma's work but The Paradise is the one I come back to the most. Also since I never get to talk about the subject I have to add, Mission to Mars was a perfectly decent space-exploration movie and it beats the hell out of Interstellar.

Yeah, there were a lot of moving scenes compared to the average space movie, he has a knack for the sexual and sensual relationships in his movies, and it shows even when he's doing something like Mission to Mars, which was very different from his previous filmography. He has no problem transcending genres while still retaining his "style".

Femme Fatale I've been wanting to see for a while but Australian tv never shows good movies and Australian internet only provides me with what would probably be 2004-tier bandwidth by your standards. Kek, you sound like you read Armond White, if you don't he's a meme on Sup Forums but he's generally one of the few critics worth reading on a regular basis. He's got the erudition to back up his opinion as well, so even if you disagree with him about a film, he will explain exactly why he does or doesn't like it, and you'll always learn something new if you read him. It's pretty funny that he's a gay conservative negro too, it really pisses of the plebs that get mad about some movie on Rotten Tomatoes not getting a perfect 100%.

Hopefully you can check out Femme Fatale, there is a lot in French and the version I saw didn't have subtitles, but it was still pretty easy to figure out what was going on because De Palma is such a great visual director. Sometimes public libraries have movies if you can't find it online.

A lot of work seems to be made for autists who will complain about minor scientific inconsistencies, while they completely ignore all of the human elements, it's something that seemed to be popularized with Kubrick in stuff like 2001, but Kubrick was good with the camera and could get some great performances, which most of his imitators can't.

And I agree on the Kubrick comparison. Kubrick could be dry and hard to penetrate but his technical mastery and attention to detail mean that he never made a movie that wasn't watchable. White once nailed the comparison but I can't remember the exact words. The gist is that Nolan is just as fussy on finicky details and everything he makes is technically competent, but he puts 0 thought into anything beyond that so it makes his work incredibly boring.

Pauline Kael (Armond White's Armond White) accused Kubrick of the same thing. I don't entirely disagree, I find his stuff to be pretty often dry, but holy hell is Nolan just on another level of soullessness. He'll never make a movie one hundredth as engrossing as Eyes Wide Shut, which I think is Kubrick's best movie even if it is the meme choice.
