I visited St. Petersburg for the first time a year ago, amazing city and people (crazy drivers though)

Russia has a great history, beautiful and nice people, but my only worry is the government which seems more like a Mafia. Maybe I was lied to, I dunno, but the stories of corruption and violence and censorship are too many to ignore.

I always hope for better relations though, but Putin's ego might be preventing that. I dunno, let's see what happens.

Dreadful place. Just dreadful. Moscow and St Petersburg are fairly pleasant if you're extremely wealthy and the weather is good. Other than that everyone who lives there just looks fucking miserable.

Americans and russians should be the best of friends in the interconnected world, we have many common enemies, relatively compatible cultures, and very few points of direct conflict, arctic oil being the only really big one. Americans and Russians have nothing to gain only to lose by fighting each other, and between us we would be completely beyond challenge.

I have no animosity for it, and I have indeed started reading about it as I have become interested in your country.

It wasn't really a choice, The USSR dissolved because of economics, Moscow just acknowledged it and let it happen peacefully rather than resist the inevitable with an ocean of shed blood. They we're teetering on the edge of being a failed state and rather than cross over and losing everything they cut everything loose to float or sink. One of the few times in history people have had power and access to the force necessary to keep that power and instead chose to give it up and spare the people some suffering, kinda admirable actually.
