Also somebody should check work progress from time to time. You'll also need an electrician/gas technician and plumber.

it's still going to cost quite a bit. you need inspectors, county architect approval, many codes to adhere to, public utility hookups, the land, materials, rental of heavy machinery to dig and pour the foundation and process materials. electrical, heating, water, these add up fast.
all that said, a quality man is fully capable of building a house, and it'd be satisfying. i plan on doing it. i don't want mexicans doing sloppy work and cheap materials and construction.
