What's interesting is that he has suffered severe trauma from an accident he suffered as a child. In his case it was an aircraft propeller that cut off his left arm.
But it gets weirder. I visited a gallery that did what's called "outsider art disability programs" and I got the same story again and again. "Oh, a building fell on them". "Oh, she was in a transcendental cult, but then she suffered a concussion." These artists appear to have even less control than we know.
But there's an even weirder layer to this. Some of these disability art programs are being used as tools for diagnosis. Apparently, when children have certain diseases, they draw different shapes and patterns.
