To elaborate - Arab countries can have 1 of 2 governments: Secular strongmen or Islamist theocracy. Any attempt to bring in democracy, like in Afghanistan, Iraq or Egypt is inherantly unstable due to the tribal nature of the Middle East and leads to anarchic civil wars (in Iraq or Afghanistan) or the reassertion of strongman rule (in Egypt).
So yeah, Assad is harsh by our standards, but that's what's needed to keep Syria stable. He's easily the best option.
And despite propaganda claims, it's much more likely that today's attack was an accidentaly strike on a rebel storage plant for chemical weapons or a false flag.

The recent gas "attack" comes days after the DoD said that Syria was not on top of their priorities. That time isn't a coincidence so I doubt they are not happy about it but they don't care.
Besides that attack was likely done by the rebels again. Assad handed what little of his chemical arsenal he had at the urging of Russia in 2013. He's winning the war conventionally, he wouldn't gas a bunch of pointless civilians on purpose.
