Last I checked on the Syrian war, Assad was happily winning and gaining territory. The militant characters were on the back foot. Both sides knew that chemical weapons use was a good way to include the US in the party. Not good for Assad, good for the militants.
Suddenly, after a change in US government, you see a 'chemical weapons attack'. You'd have to be pretty gullible to think that he was the likely suspect.
