A large explosion in Mogadishu near the Ministry of Defense has killed 40 people. It appears to be a failed assassination attempt against the chief of the Somali National Army. Smaller blasts are reported in other parts of Mogadishu.

fun fact: time magazine quoted a reporter who lived in mogadishu for three months in the early 90s and during all that time could not figure out whether cars in that country were supposed to be driven on the left or right side of the road. simply watching the traffic wasn't informative enough.

so for instance Mogadishu is in Hawiye territory, so naturally the Ishaaq and Darod clans look askance at the claim of it being the capital of all somali speakers. Siad Barre was a Darod, so naturally there was no way he could rule the Ishaaq for long. and so on. the country only persists because all factions want to turn it into a structure allowing them to rule over the others. we could divide the country along clan lines into smaller countries but they'd go to war with each other instantly. that region is so fucked it's not even funny.
