If a company asks for a software engineer and college degrees are rare, they'll only get a handful of applicants, and those handful of applicants can basically write their own salaries because they know they're a scarce commodity. But if everyone has a college degree, you'll get hundreds of applicants for the same job, and the corporation will be able to dick them out of a good salary. Bye bye "good paying jobs."
