I mean, that's probably not quite an asteroid sized mass, but it's still much bigger than the average meteorite, and I imagine there's a lot of combustible material and explosive material built into the damn thing, too.

Why were they so hell-bent on dropping colonies onto the earth, too? Wouldn't that be equivalent to Ireland uprooting the entire landmass of Ulster physically from the ocean floor and lobbing onto England in its bid for independence? In the end, you may or may not get what you want, and you're now missing a huge chunk of your population and clay.

IIRC, the colonies that were dropped were generally either evacuated beforehand, or left vacant after periodic civil unrest caused the Federation to dispose of rebels. Also, Jaburo, the Fed base, was located underground, so nukes were considered useless and the best way to destroy it was by dropping an enormous mass right on top of it.
Unfortunately, there were complications and instead of landing in South America, the colony dropped on Australia.

Yes, but the colonies were still the spacenoid equivalent of clay, right? If they're that big it'd take a prohibitively long time and large amount of funding to make a new one, so they're basically hamstringing their potential manpower for a superweapon.
