They didn't care about what was there before they built the church.
A building built in 1868 is a recent one, especially for a church.
Le Sacré Coeur was built because the Church wanted to absolve the "sins" of France during the 18th century, the French Revolution, the revolutions of 1831 and 1848, and the Paris Commune.
These buildings are useless, and have no history. They're not used by anyone.
