I sort of like anime because I don't pay any attention to the actors and it lets me get into it more, but I can't stand moeshit or the stuff that panders to otaku neck beards. You know that's a pretty interesting possible correlation. Of my friends the ones that are incredibly into anime are rather... effeminate looking and sounding. And one apparently is a woman now, however the fuck that works, but I stopped talking to him after he started pretending to be a girl online and started bugging me to draw their made-up loli character. I think the whole "muh chinese cartoons have sooo much story" is just thinly veiled childish escapism. You can get as much story from live-action films and tv but the bright colors, big eyed characters and popular themes (magic, fantasy, cutesey shit) appeal to the adultescent who doesn't want to grow up and is in denial about growing up. Then they pretend it's like some sort of superior divine artform when 99% of it is garbage.

There are a couple reasons why people watch anime.
1. It is easily accessible for anyone who knows the slightest bit about torrenting and/or XDCC and jap companies don't enforce copywrong very hard against people in the west who pirate.
2. The wide variety of anime out there (From ABe works to KyoAni SoL, A-1 pictures melodramas like AnoHana, Sunrise original anime trainwrecks, Imaishi hypefests like KLK or TTGL etc.) allows people to have their pick of things they like. There also tends to be a larger focus on strength coming from either willpower, social bonds, or ancestry/hierarchy. An example would be like in BlazBlue. The main character, Ragna, becomes stronger by finding a purpose. Noriko from Gunbuster comes to terms with herself and is a typical coming of age heroine. Haibane Renmei focuses on the healing from wounds with the bonds of those around you.
With a large number of themes, you'll find a large number of reasons for liking different shows.
3. It is a good litmus test to see who has been around imageboards for a while. If someone posted on Sup Forums asking for source on let's say KLK, they would be laughed and told to fuck off. It forms a sort of shared heritage in a place without many things allowing such a thing.
4. The communities are very closely knit. If two weebs meet each other and can manage to hold a conversation, they could probably talk for hours about shows they liked, disliked, the in jokes for certain shows (Code Geass more like Chode Gayass amirite?). This expectation of knowledge makes it easy to get into it since it helps for a way of making friends with someone who is likely to have similar interests.
5. No shame for liking cute girls who do cute things. I was watching a BlazBlue stream one night and it had the DXD koneko dance and someone complained about the lewdness. One of the confirmed girls told her to fuck off if she didn't like lewd anime girls. It is a culture that doesn't suppress male desires.

Asia Studies major here so lots of anime fans in my social area code. They're the most depressingly pathetic genetic dead ends I've ever seen. Literally the LGBT student society has fewer pathetic faggots. It's honestly just said to see all these young people who clearly will never have a decent job or social circle or reproduce or be respected by anyone.

While I live in Worst Korea and not Japan, he reality is that (despite what weeaboos would tell you) the two cultures are close enough that shared generalizations can be made.
Basically in both Korea and Japan you have what amounts to a totalitarian society, one which is terrifyingly self-regulating. Everyone in society has a role and is expected to keep to it without error. There is some wriggle-room, but only towards the top of the pyramid for successful artists and creatives.
The average person though is made to live in absolute terror of what other people think of him or her. People try to not stick out too much, to the extent that social interactions can appear literally scripted. There is a "set way" to do practically everything and a set list of socially accepted hobbies.
Sup Forumsacks often praise East Asian societies for their nationalism, but the reality of living in an extremely nationalistic society is ludicrous and childishly hypocritical. Governments, media and academia don't even try to be remotely objective, and conceding ANY ground to rivals is considered a defeat and a sellout. Ridiculous and tiresome diplomatic and trade battles are waged over everything from statues to minuscule islands. The Koreans are the worst for this, but the reality is that the Japanese and Chinese are the same just a little more subtle about it.
Also the much-vaunted Asian "politeness" is a myth. Basically their societies surpress physical aggression particularly towards strangers, but this doesn't make for a pleasant society only more passive-aggressive ones. It's like how blind people can smell better; deprived of the tool of aggression these people are masters of its infinitely more annoying cousin passive aggression. They've developed phsyching each other out and verbal abuse into an art form. And they DO use violence but only against social inferiors as a matter of prudence.
