By all accounts the places in the country with the most legal gun ownership have proportionally lower crime rates than the places with the strictest gun laws on the books. Chicago, Detroit, L.A., Oakland the list goes on.

Republicans point toward largely homogeneous parts of the country without a dense urban population of poor niggers where almost everyone owns some kind of gun weather it is a .22 plinking rifle or a collection of rifles and handguns. The basic theory is that a armed person is a threat to those who would attack them but an unarmed person can be attacked without fear of reprisal. leading to the "gang" mentality where a group armed with nothing but a knife or blunt object can threaten and rob anyone knowing they have the upper hand.
