If the flight is overbooked why is there an empty seat next to him? surely if its overbooked the people seated get to go and its first come first served so he should be aloud to stay. There is more at play when filling a plane to capacity than peple and seats. Commercial airliners often only fuel just a little more than needed to save weight. Passengers checking multiple bags or passengers that are over 100kg can cause empty seats to be needed for weight and balance reasons.

Some passengers had agreed to get bumped off of the flight before they got to this guy

The story is this: After boarding was complete, United Airlines decided at the last minute that they wanted to fly more of their staff to another airport on-route to help with next-day boarding at that airport, so they kicked customers off to fly their staff, instead of boarding their staff.

If they have no other way of getting staff somewhere than strongarming a customer then tough shit the employees don't get to go. The video makes me so livid the way the "police" just lunge at him. With the chain reaction I geuss it depends on how far the flight is going and whether there are other ones going there. Anyone have proof they pay cash? I call bullshit. They give you flyer miles points/credit with tons of restrictions. And all you get a verbal agreement that unless you recorded with your phone, they will say nevermind once you're off the plane and at the gate? Why would you expect them to hold up to their end of the deal when they're willing to drag people off the plane and break their end of the contract?

People don't want to get off because of the hours it takes to get your bags thru security and checkin's then the time to get onto the plane. Then you have to get off the plane and call your friend/family who dropped you off to come pick you back up again because the next flight is in a few days and you're not going to sleep at the airport for a few days.
