A huge part of his appeal was that for once there was a candidate where the stuff you had to ignore was dwarfed by the positives. You didn't have to hold your nose when you listed his campaign objectives. It wasn't all compromise. As he slips away from those promises he returns to the familiar territory occupied by every other politician. His charm was that before now he'd above all that.
