Uhhh.....yeah they do. Private businesses don't build roads willy nilly cause they won't profit from them naturally, they'd only spend money building and repairing them accordingly. Unless it's a toll road, which most people hate and wouldn't want to pay every damn time they drive on certain roads that may be more time efficient to go through. The government contracts with construction companies to do the work, they get their money directly from the government to essentially make up for the costs of the infrastructure.

Of course, you have to ask if private entities would have built them had the feds not picked up the check. Love it or hate it, our federal government is damned good at picking up the check on projects or techs that are great for private business/industry, but too expensive or complex for any one or even a coalition to do themselves.

The government builds roads for profits too though. As in linking cities and towns together so more trade occurs, and they can take more taxes. All I'm saying with this post is that they are no different than a business in that regard. They aren't doing it for the sake of altruism.
