If you want to be prepared then you are better of Homesteading rather then Prepping. Develop skills like electronics, mechanics or horticulture. Learn how to make a bow. It's true, I bring friends to the range regularly, all of them were good enough with a pistol after one hour. Rifles are simpler as you just have to align the sights. You don't need to learn how to rank in the top 10 at .22 hunter to kill someone.
