A lot of women going out of highschool or starting college adopt a cat or dog, and many have had family pets growing up.
I'm not comparing them to that degree, I'm saying that pets require attention and care much like a human child would, a kid is a larger responsibility for sure, but they both need your attention at the end of the day.

I thing most people know only that barn cats or degenerate indoor fancy breed cats - imo they do not know cats at all. If you communicate (yes, talking to them) with them since kittens, you will get very nice companion. I have 3 cats, each one respond to her/his name and when I came back from work, they all came to meet me at the garden (they now the sound of my engine). They never have never hurt anyone, I can my cousins toddlers playing with them without worry. People often say they are like dogs and that they never seen it before.

Personally I think it's to do with more authoritarianism vs libertarianism. People who gravitate towards more authoritarian tend to prefer dogs, whereas libertarians tend to prefer cats because cats are one of the freest pets out there and do whatever the fuck they want.

I lost plenty of cats because they were outside during the nights. The 3 I have now sleep at home and still living (6yo), anyway, allways get new cat, I lost many years without cats because the feels and it was mistake. I love the current ones and still remember each cat I have ever had.

I've lost 3 siamese so far and it never gets easy but they're the best pets every.

Dogs are more loyal and less independent, probably becuase they've been domesticated by humans for many thousands of years longer than cats.

Dogs are much more a reflection of their owners, you look at work dogs who are well trained and they are seriously respectable animals.

Some owners are lazy fucks who don't even care for their doggos, so that reflects in the dogs behaviour. Yes they need more work and cats are way more independent, but they're absolutely astonishing animals when taken care of.
