It helps that he doesn't have to forage for food everyday, or provide for a family. Really frees up what you can do being a neet with unlimited time and resources. Go home to your comfy warm home, get a full meal, rest up in your pillow fort, then go play in the woods for a couple hours, rinse and repeat. His productivity would tank when you take away all his modern amenities boosting his performance. Also helps that he probably has a high school diploma or college degree and the unlimited knowledge of the internet to hold his hand through the process.

I live in a fairly large town, (130k people). The nearest fresh water supply is 7 miles away. If we did not have pipes and utilities, I'd have to drive there and back to get water for me and my family.
Just because there is a water supply does not mean you can build next to it as the property is often already owned or claimed. This is why wells are a common alternative and much to my surprise I found out recently that my neighbor has a well tap in their back yard. I had no idea we even had a underground water supply.
