1) Progress is derived from competition, and in a capitalist society competing parties are everywhere, as in science, politics, economics etc
2) If you were to be a marine biologist you will need certain funding, because you aren't actually contributing to the survival of society, and because in capitalism there is so much money flowing around funding isn't really a problem. While in a communist place where you are rationing food, you don't exactly except people to be curious about the characteristics of a fucking fish
