You won't necessarily be killed or shot, but there's a high chance your stuff will be stolen, even if you do stuff like lock your car, you'll have to lock your doors, windows, etc. at virtually all times, you won't really be able to trust anybody around, it just isn't an optimal living arrangement.

I grew up in a Mexican ghetto (I'm white, btw) in a midwest city. There were lots of shootings, and fights, and we were robbed twice while I grew up. For the most part it was generally a "Don't fuck with us, we don't fuck with you." kind of deal. I hear it's different in black ghettos though.
