I've argued a lot with Holocaust deniers and the argument boils down to the following:
The denier will make common holocaust denial claims (not enough gas chambers to cremate that many Jews, gas chamber door was fake, Zyklon-B was for delousing, the allies were the ones responsible, there was never a plan for extermination, typhus etc) which are claims that are easily refuted by a number of reputable sources.
Once the claims have been refuted, which can be a somewhat length process, the denier proceeds to deny the veracity of the sources that are used to refute those claims. They will argue that these sources are fabricated by Soviets or Jews to guilt the white race into cuckery or something along those lines.
The argument cannot progress past this point because the denier will argue that any source that disproves their claim is a fabrication, but every single source that supports their claims cannot possibly be a fabrication, and is completely 100% objectively true.
When someone claims that only their version of history is correct and rejects all evidence that argues the contrary, the debate has to end because there could be no more intellectual gain from it.

It's a matter of truth, first and foremost, for holocaust denyers, I guess. There's definitely something fishy with the whole affair, but we aren't even allowed by law to investigate it in any meaningful way.
For Jews, however, this is a crucial point, as it supports the very narrative that allowed for them to get their own state given to them on a silver platter, so it's, understandably, very scary for many of them that some of us should doubt the official story.

I agree that if we're so confident it happened, any research should be allowed because it would only demonstrate that it actually happened. Anything else just makes it look like something is afoot.
As to your second point, it's a huge meh to me. Normies think the Holocaust was the worst thing ever. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the logic here seems to be that if only we could prove it didn't happen, then all the Normies would suddenly be okay with wiping out Israel and letting it happen for real right now. I'm just curious as to why so many people here need to believe it didn't happen to justify not liking kikes. There's plenty to not fucking like about them even with the Holocaust having happened.
