Go to a city like Memphis, that still has jobs, but is also affordable and you can quickly get into the rural areas still.

Actually Chicago is a really safe city. Its the most segregated big city in the country. All the shooting happen in 3 neighborhoods, and everybody else pretty much ignores it. For as many blacks as there are in Chicago, none of them will live in your neighborhood. Its great.
