Her parents wanted to go to a party. They didn't have a babysitter, so they'd send one of the parents every hour to check on all the kids. Madeleine wasn't sleepy. In fact, she was hyper. Mom decided to give her some pills and put her to bed. Before the pills kicked in, she got up and started bouncing around some more. Dad decided she needed a pill, so he gave her one. Neither of them knew the other gave her a pill.
Either the pills interacted badly with one another, or they combined to make a deadly overdose. They only later discovered that they'd both had the same idea.
When they realized what they had done, they came up with a scheme to dump the body. Losing a child was bad enough. But going to prison for a stupid mistake was more than they could bear. They had other children to raise, and careers, etc. It was best to just dump her, call it an abduction, and get on with their lives.
