To get technical about it, the Old Testament forbids lending money for interest to members of your own tribe (i.e. other Jews), but it's fine and dandy to vig the foreigners.
The controlling verse is Deuteronomy 23:19-20
"You shall not charge interest on loans to your brother, interest on money, interest on food, interest on anything that is lent for interest.
You may charge a foreigner interest, but you may not charge your brother interest, that the Lord your God may bless you in all that you undertake in the land that you are entering to take possession of it."
So, where the early Christians fucked up was that they decided that this also meant that Christians were not allowed to loan for interest to other Christians, leaving them no recourse but to go to the Jews.
Why this is a fuck-up is that Christians were really not bound by this because Jesus gave the Christians a new covenant with God and nowhere in the New Testament does it forbid lending money for interest, but does say you should get paid interest.

Depends on the church you attend some use Gregorian, some use revised Julian, however the one I go do uses the Julian calendar.
