Was told the same thing at school, but when looking into European civilisation you quickly find there's more too it. All symbols of the 3rd Reich have European origin. If you travel to Hitler's home town of Braunau and visit the cathedral you can see swastikas, hundreds of years old cut into the stone ceiling.
