I'm an atheist and I am slowly turning into Christianity. I'm a historyfag and the more I read about the history of Europe and how faith shaped the politics of the time, the more I find about how much Christianity shaped the western world and how much the christian beliefs apply to my own moral beliefs.

Because dumb people still believe morality is a universal, non changing phenomenon that has always existed since the world was created 6'000. Years ago

You're an idiot, sort of. Don't believe in Christianity because you think it's good for society, or the economy, or for family, or for government. You either believe it's true and the God of Christianity is the mind and heart behind the universe and follow it, or you don't.
Enough of this "oh well it's good for the government and is in-line with my political views, I like Christianity but won't claim to be one". that is exactly what Christ warned us we cannot and should not ever do. I have been hearing too many people say this lately and also have been seeing too many people post that on this board.
Accept Christ and take up your cross. It will take the entireity of your person, it is a life long journey that will never stop, it will always be a work in progress but if you give up your heart and look to God you will get the earth thrown in, anything is within your grasp with him and anything is possible if you believe and kill that part of yourself (satan) which has been resisting God your entire life.
You can do this anytime you want. Even tonight, if you'd like.
Sebastian Nguyen
Mere Christianity and Problem of Pain are good for begginers but barely scratch the surface. Christian Reflections, God on the Dock, Allegory of Love and The Discarded Image are more in depth and go into much greater detail.
Lincoln Ross
>Keep the beliefs and throw out the god
Thats more aligned to what I believe. There are certain teachings of christ that I like and try to follow and some teachings of buddha that I like to follow.
I really want to read the bible but dont know which version to read (everyone says KJV)
I'd also like to read the jewish torah but someone mentioned its better to read the old testament instead.
can someone please give some input?
Julian Price
yeah but he's just getting into it. Everyone has to start somewhere, and it might as well be books that are good for beginners.

However, I must ask, what kind of brand of Christianity must I follow (Orthodoxy, Catholicism, etc)? Or should I just ignore that?

whether or not you believe morality is universal, karma exists bro, and it exists everywhere regardless if it matches your moral believes or not.
many of christs teachings were based around that concept and some further spiritual guidelines.
Similar to buddhas.
Jace Sanchez
I wouldn't worry for now. Eventually if (hopefully when) you start going to church you might have to do some research on what sort of teaching you get.
Brayden Roberts
Religious hasn't just endured for so long because it's completely full of shit. A lot of the axioms of religion when followed generally enrich the lives of the followers and society as a whole. (Generally.)
But the idea that these actions are good because there is some transcendent being who decreed it such, and that the transcendent being will punish those who break them is primitive. You should understand actions deemed "right" should be taken because they are beneficial.
Benjamin Brooks
I was an atheist back in school in a little shit hole town on the Austrian Italian border
But after school ended I started to become slightly more religious from actually learning about it then the final nail in my non believer coffin was moving to Roma.

Realize that Jesus died for you while you were yet a sinner (Romans 5:8) and to go to heaven and meet him, you might want to believe on his sacrifice (John 3:16). And read Romans 1.
God Bless, user
Landon Miller
The Jewish Torah would be only the first 5 books of the Old Testament, so reading the Old Testament would include more. I suggest ESV version of the Bible. People like the kjv because it sounds holy and mysterious, but it's hard to read and the old English doesn't help you understand at all.

The Eth Cepher is the superior bible. It has the language of the KJV with minor alterations. It restores the name of God (Yahuah) in the text and restores the original Hebrew names to English transliterations. Also reorganizes the books of the bible to chronological order so there is a narrative arch when you read it. Furthermore it restores the books of the bible that were taken out of the Geneva Bile and original few editions for the KJV, as well as other books that the scripture quotes that were otherwise not included in other bible compendiums.
Ethan Baker
This is pretty good. He should definitely write more

do this, imagine i responded with "so? why should anyone care about that in a godless world?" to your post, but then do it again for the answer to that, and again until it wouldn't make sense to ask that question. what would, ultimately, be the reason to care about that in a world without design, purpose, good, or evil, which logically follows from the absence of God?

The only thing i don't understand about earnest christians is, when you look back on history how does it not ruin any basis you may have had for accepting that as a legitimate belief?
The crisis of the third century for example, before the crisis of the 3rd century the modern western world wasn't even close to being christian, and christians were still a persecuted sect of the relatively small abrahamic branch of religions, however, when the crises of the third century occured (multiple barbarian invasions multiple plagues, death and corruption everywhere) the romans mass converted from their paganistic imperial cult to christianity, not only due to the coincidental timing of diocletians persecution of chrisitans, and constantines appraisal of christianity, and the various disasters surrounding those two events, but also because in christianity , an eternal paradise in the afterlife was promised to all believers of the one true god, something very appealing to the masses suffering the tremendous body counts as seen in the crisis of the third century, and then quickly after that christianity was the dominant religion in the west, then the empire fell and then cam about the various competing christian states, and crusades and such and then you had colonization which pretty much rapidly disseminated Christianity across the world making it one of if not the most popular religions today.
so it seems to me that christianity is less a religion of truth and product of divine providence, but moreso a set of ideas that was at the right place at the right time, carried by coincidences
NOW
with all that being said i can obviously admit that christianity has been a huge civilizing force in western society and has probably progressed humanity further than any dogmatic set of ideals in the past however, i think the point we are at now is one where we should extract all the archetypal moral stories from the bible and use them as wise parables. Nothing more.
Ethan Torres
what's the point you're trying to make?
How big a religion is has no basis on whether it's true or not?
Tyler Evans
Here is how we save Christianity.
We acknowledge that the concept of a divine deity is not meant to be taken literally but is more of a metaphor. The inexorable march of science and reason demands nothing less.
Christianity then becomes a system of values and cultural identity, not unlike budhism. It will proagate itself on the merits of its own teachings, not on the lie of some divine being. It can continue to worship jesus the man and his lessons. It can even continue to worship 'God' in some abstract sense' without pretending he is some omnipotent being living in the clouds.
It will regain the majority of Western atheists if it does this.
Catholicism specifically needs to abandon celibacy for its priests.
Daniel Morgan

t. high school freshman
Brandon Richardson
did you absorb anything i said?
im making the point that christianity isnt true, and the only reason it ever rose to prominence and is even considered as a valid and logical beliefs system is because of the crisis of the third century.
Now we know through science that christianity is a false religion and that the conscience mind does not actually survive death, but anyhow my big point is that christianity is false and has always been false, and the only reason were discussing it now is because christianities doctrines of eternal paradise at a circumstantial time of death and despair
Parker Foster
i am usually good at seeing other people's position, but why would you want Christianity, but just without God? why should you care if people believe that? why does it bother you? i can't understand what your motivation could be other than a hatred of God.
Blake Clark
OMG MY GOD, WOULD YOU FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, POST SOMETHING POLITICAL??
Logan Bennett

Adrian Campbell
christianity has nothing to do with moral faggotry thats a new breed of degenerate christianity from the alt right who are turning to christianity for the morals and values alone
christianity has nothing to do with moralfaggotry and jesus christ would look down on what a lot of people are doing and not believing in god and just using christianity for its morals
you might as well believe in satan if youre going to ignore god and try to be righteous before god
we are not under the law but under grace

Jordan Davis
>when you look back on history how does it not ruin any basis you may have had for accepting that as a legitimate belief?
It seemed like you were arguing that Christianity isn't true because of how widespread it became based on the crisis of the third century which is a non sequitur.
>we know through science that christianity is a false religion How so? What part of modern science is incompatible with Christianity?
>conscience mind does not actually survive death Does Christianity claim this?
>the only reason were discussing it now is because christianities doctrines of eternal paradise at a circumstantial time of death and despair Interesting, though one might think that something more than death and despair would be needed to convert people into believing in fairy tales right?
Julian Butler
Most things that people believe in are not based on the existence of a deity.
People have ideological, value and cultural beliefs completely separate of the divine. The entire 20th century was dominated by conflicting beliefs in capitalism, communism and facism believed in fervently by their hundreds of millions of adherants even without any god backing them up.
It doesn't bother me if other people belived in god. What i'm saying is that Christianity is doomed in the long term if it as a movement clings to the doctrine that it is entirerly is founded upon the existence of a divine being.
Why don't I want to see that happen? Because Christianity is also a values system and part of my cultural heritage and of the cultural heritage of Europe.
Christianity without God is entirely possible. You can even have have Christianity with 'God' as a metaphor. But belief in a divine being is in the long term not viable in the face of science and reason and if it is the sole foundation of Christianity then Christianity will crumble.
Luke Wright
It's hard to beat C.S. Lewis due to his engaging writing style.

step 1: don't come to Sup Forums for information, of all places, the kike infestation is real
step 2: druids. yes druids. the transition from druidism to christianity is the best starting place to learn about your ancestors and where they came from spiritually
Celt, Druid, and Culdee by Isabel Hill Elder is a nice short book on the subject, you can probably read it in a few days, and doesn't have much useless or boring information
you can also just start reading Druidic triads, and note their similarity to christianity
Bentley Turner
No mate I'm being sincere.
For me becoming agnostic was much harder than becoming a Christian. Not everyone can snap from athiest to theist in a instant.
Brayden Davis
As agnostic who wants to be religious but can't make myself to genuinely believe in God and all Bible stories, I really like your suggestion
Luis Campbell

It seemed like you were arguing that Christianity isn't true because of how widespread it became based on the crisis of the third century which is a non sequitur.
no im arguing that the only reason people regard it as true is because of how widespread it is
How so? What part of modern science is incompatible with Christianity?
have you read genesis? pretty much that entire this. the adam and eve creation myth, its all clearly disproven by science
>Does Christianity claim this?
Are you baiting? of course it does? is the whole point of the bible not selling your either eternal paradise or eternal damnation?
Interesting, though one might think that something more than death and despair would be needed to convert people into believing in fairy tales right?
Not necesarrily, im saying at a time of ignorance and when there wasnt alot of competent knowledge about the world, the explanations of Christianity werre seemingly reasonable solutions to the problems at the time.
As ive already stated, the bible is full of archetypally perfect stories of morals and ethics that has been a huge civilizing force in western culture, but it should readily apparent to anyone with any sense that there is no god in the judeo-christian sense, and the bible is not something to be interpreted as scientifically and factually true

you're better off with GK Chesterton, who was one of the main inspirations of CS Lewis' beliefs
If you chart the transformation from Chesterton who inspired Lewis who inspired Charles Schultz, you see that this type of thinking became whining faggotry over time
its better to start with the alpha male, Chesterson: read either Heretics or Orthodoxy
Anthony Cruz
Good words friend. There is no such time as the now. Why not start in the now and see how it treats tomorrow.
become a cultural christian like the vast majority of western christians who dont actually think its factually true
Jonathan Hughes
>have you read genesis? pretty much that entire this. the adam and eve creation myth, its all clearly disproven by science If you read Genesis like a police report then you have a theological knowledge of a child. Genesis writing style was written in stanzas, in the form of classical Hebrew poems. This writing style is different from other books such as the gospels which should be taken literally.

KJV is seriously best. Listen to God's Secretaries, a podcast on how the KJV was written. Everything else is made overblown and unmajestic.
Camden Young
“For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:18-19
“It is easier for Heaven and Earth to pass away than for the smallest part of the letter of the law to become invalid.” (Luke 16:17)
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest part or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place.” (Matthew 5:17)
“Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law” (John7:19)
Jaxson Brown
Peterson's view of religion is flawed because it's ridiculously abstracted from real experiences and real theology. You need to go further.
Andrew Hughes
>We acknowledge that the concept of a divine deity is not meant to be taken literally but is more of a metaphor.
That most certainly would save Christianity. But I don't think it'll happen, at least not naturally.
I think Christianity will be brought to its knees and forced to morph into an ideology.
Which is perfectly fine. I mean, mostly.
John Butler
read the sermon of the mount.
Clearly, the law mentioned here is moral law, not civil law.
