Tonight – May 7, 2017 – watch for the bright waxing gibbous moon to pair up with the giant planet Jupiter. They’ll be easy to spot. Jupiter, the fifth planet outward from the sun and largest planet in our solar system, is currently the brightest starlike object in the evening sky. Next to the moon, it’ll be a beautiful sight. - EarthSky
Relax.
Probably just supernova.
Theres one tweet abt it (estrela grande). i have a picture on my cheap kodak. Made an 8 second hand held exposure that has no distortion except for the star, that is vertically oval. I dont have a computer around. Am trying to vonnect to my tablet (camera prptocol is ptp, trying to find an app to connect to it).

Dude... North/South is relevant for seasons.
For day/night time you need to check East/West.

You're just high on some hardcore brazilian drug
i cant hear you over my DAYTIME
There are 2 stars that collided several hundred years ago and the light is going to reach us sometime between now and 2022. It will be the brightest object in our sky minus our sun and will rival the moon for several weeks.

If the light hasn't reached us yet how do we know this happened?
Get ready to roast in the proceeding gamma rays.
Projected physics, dipshit.
that's what we call the Sun, it's normal.

Are you people sure you aren't just seeing cirius?
calm down
you can download an app called night sky (it's not free)
But it works along side with the camera and if you point it at the star you will know what you are looking at (probably jupiter)
Someone post results!
I'm a bong, so no.
that's what the app gave me, but I don't know if op was talking about something next to the moon
Southern Hemisphere only?
Well obviously mudslime countries aren't aligned with American ones.
