In civil war they were pro tzar, so commies tried pretty hard to wipe them when they got to power.
After communism, nobody cared about them and they were about to disappear.
Few years later putin started some kind of revival. Now they are basically paramilitary

Literally noone in the Civil War was pro tzar.
Cossaks mutinied when they were ordered to crush the demonstration in the capital.
Cossaks were slightly in favor of the bolsheviks. They initially swore loyalty to the Reds, but it became more complicated further on.
