But you are wrong about Hitler invading Russia if you think it was irrational. Stalin had purged his officer corps, and was rebuilding for major (think tens of millions) offensive zerg rush. Military history is fun to learn about. You see, countries have to design new weapons, be they tanks or planes, or battleships... but these take time to build. At some point you have to go with a good blueprint today - as being better than a perfect blueprint tomorrow. Are you following me? So let's say at some point you decide to start a new line of tanks - you pick you best design and start building. If you come up with some better design in a couple of years, too bad, you are in production. Save your good ideas for the next cycle. Follow me?
