The tanuki is just an animal. An animal with significance in the Shinto religion, but still just an animal. It would have existed without the Shinto religion, and is therefore not valid proof.

Again, not necessarily proof. It could have just been well known to have existed in Japan before mainstream science had found it. Very likely in fact, given the isolationist nature of Japan at the time as well as it's relatively small size.
