Chile, during the 80s, was the fastest growing country in South America BY FAR. Even if you consider the 82-83 recession. The other countries didn't even come close.
Same for the 90s, when Pinochet was not in power anymore, but the stability was due to his economic policies and the constitution of 1980.

About Pinochet? Great economy, literally no one here denies that, not even the commies - Pinochet created the middle class. Tipically the argument against Pinochet is that althought the economic system is great, it has been used to make the rich even richer and inequally distribute the wealth (right now, the only ones who can talk about it are communists, because the other lefties have been involved in corruption scandals), but a lot of that happened because, for some reason, Pinohet privatized a lot of high profit companied right before leaving the government; a lot of people died (for either being commies or simply people who opposed Pinochetnfor those crimes); and teachers aren't being well paid because during the regime, the teachers (tipically from history, language and such) told the student to oppose Pinochet and such - they were seen as disruptors of the order. Another thing is that a lot of the economic problems during the Allende goverment were because the CIA boycotted him, so the commies here usually say that to tell "we couldn't see how great life could be, because of the boycott". There is a lot more to say because I obviously can't summarise almot one years in a few lines, and now I have to go to the uni.
