Is tipping necessary?

What are Sup Forums's opinion on tipping? Here in the UK barely anyone tips but that's because we have a proper minimum/ living wage.

Why is it that Burgers rely so much on other people's generosity? Why can't servers have a proper wage?

Just read this theodysseyonline.com/an-open-letter-to-the-people-who-dont-tip-their-servers

and it made me a little confused. Is tipping that essential?

No, serving tables isn't a backbreaking enough of a job to warrant me subsidizing your pay. I would certainly rather pay the people who actually cooked my food, not the person to refills my water a couple of times.

Everyone in America should stop tipping. It would incentivize the workers to unionize.

Tipping is a European custom anyway. We should reject all European customs.

I know here, most of the time tipping is put in a glass jar and then at the end of the night/week it is split amongst all the staff according to their role so obviously the cooks will get more. Whereas some other just split it equally between the workers.

Tipping is (((their))) invention to pay ppl belowe minimum wage while lromising them more in tips, and when they dont get any it they/customer fault never (((owner)))
Also tips are not taxed so (((their))) hurting the state as well.

It's demeaning. Pay flat rates like any other job. Don't put workers at the mercy of their customers' whim

What the fuck ever. There is way more important shit going on now.

If you frequent the same establishment, and you don't tip, you're going to have a bad time.

>Whereas some other just split it equally between the workers.

If my tip isn't going exclusively towards the people who cooked my meal I'm not tipping. End of story. What sort of stellar service are these people providing that every other person in a service industry isn't?

Why don't we tip store clerks who ring in our beer and grab our smokes from the back wall?

>We should reject all European customs.
Don't worry, you're doing a damn fine job of doing that. 56%.

Why though? Shouldn't the server maintain a certain standard? If the server isn't going above and beyond that standard why should you feel obliged to tip.

For example, someone might frequent an eatery - the service may be piss poor but the food is delicious. Why should you tip the server - wouldn't tipping the cook be more appropriate?

we burgers are naturally generous. I worked a job that paid fine, but the tips just made it that much better. tips aren't required but they are socially acceptable. makes you work harder and the customer gets a better experience/service when tips are on the line

come to America and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. no, not nyc or other tourist hot spots...i mean REAL America

lol no? I worked at a job making $9 an hour in college 8 years ago and I still got tips....

waiters aren't the only ones who get tips ya fucking retards

Tipping ass backwards bulkshit tbat omlu stupid people do.
>Why can't servers have a proper wage?
Without tips they'd get the same as other minimum wage employees. But they want more than that.
>incentivize the workers to unionize.
Unions are a cancer

I went to Ohio a few years ago, and dined out, when I got the bill they had already put a gratuity figure on it. The service wasn't that great and when we asked to remove it the server gave us daggers. If anything it made the night worse. I mean some places are different with their tip system but printing it on the bill does seem like tipping is almost required and expected, regardless of service.

>Also tips are not taxed
Yes, they are. Well, they're supposed to be reported as income and taxed as income. But tipped employees dodge those taxes.

I tip at restaurants and the pizza guy who comes all the way upstairs to give me the pizza. I sometimes tip taxi drivers but a lot less. And sometimes tip bar staff at the club.

Why not though, it makes everyone a bit happier, and if you tip the barman at a busy bar you will always get served first next time you go to get a drink. Makes you look like a g and sometimes they will top up extra booze in your drink

I try to be realistic and fair about it but I also wouldn't eat at most places others foolishly do anyway. They average tip is supposed to be 15%, but I like to evaluate the servers, if they are attentive, if they are jam packed, etc. and at the end of the meal IF they give better than average service, then I normally give a better than average tip, and if they give shitty service or it's another rude princess cunt, I have NO problem leaving no tip. Attitude matters. I've worked those types of jobs half a century ago as a kid, and grew up on a farm so I'm one of the few that respects real food and the service that comes with it. I know niggers never tip even when they have loads of (probably stolen) $$$ and whine about everything. So I won't eat at a place if niggers work there at all. So fast fake food is outta the question. I don't wanna become a liberal or fat ass or gay or something else crazy. I leave that to the rest of you.

did....you go to a 'fancy' restaurant? they typically don't do that except in ritzy, high end restaurants that typically cost more than $100 for 2 people.

also, why the fuck would you go to Ohio? that's like the sweaty ballsack of the rust belt

Thats only if you have over a certain number of people because people like to stiff tips when part of big parties and its harder on the servers. My GF is a waitress and worked a 50 person party. The owner said not to include gratuity because they were regulars. She got a $40 tip on a $1000 meal.

Denmark have no minimum / living wage and we absolutely do not tip unless on VERY specific times. If the employees got a problem with their wages its their problem to fix not mine to correct so their employer can earn more money.
Tipping is an American cancer that should stay in the new world.

There were three of us - the bill was just over $200 without the tip.

lol 4% tip. that's fucking hilarious

>200 for 3 people
ya that's why

>Unions are a cancer

Unions are a good thing. What mechanisms do you think should be in place to help raise wages for workers?

Employees have unequal bargaining power. If you say you want $10 per hour the company can just hire some illegal alien spic for $6 per hour.

Leaving shit up to the free market is bad for employees.

strange, lots of restaurants dont include gratuity. Must have just been the place. Usually its only included on parties of 6 or more and that varies.

Because, no matter what you say or whether your arguments are logically sound, Americans are stubborn and culture is culture. There is no fucking reason people should be required to tip, just like I don't tip the ambulance driver or tip the police officer. They do their job because that's what they are paid to do.

If waiters can't live on what they are being paid, they shouldn't fucking work for those shit wages. It's really that simple guys

Yup and she didnt do a shitty job either they were just cheapskates. I went to highschool with the guy who paid hes a piece of shit.

>tipping is a european custom
I've literally only ever done it in your shit country, José

>getting money like some underhand whore
I will never understand why you new worlders tip. Its a waiters job to serve you the dinner and they get paid for that. Why on earth so you paid them personally like your are their creepy uncle rewarding a good boy?

Agreed, there is no arguing with some of the people on Sup Forums though. Lolbertarians till the end

"muh free markets" are LITERALLY what caused the financial crash of 08/10/2004/2001 - oh look, 4 financial crisis's in a span of 10 years.

It's gay

>DURRRR I DUN GET OTHER CULTURE BECAUSE I TOO DUMB TO DO BASIC RESEARCH

Because you fucking faggot bucktoothed inbred socialist cunt, in the US people get like $2 an hour to wait tables and the rest if income is tips.

PS- idiots like you are why restaurants a lot of the time hype up obvious foreign-fag bills because they know you won't tip

They have a proper wage and that is their pre-tip wage. They don't deserve a cent more.

Thats just the culture. Waiters get paid minimum wage ~$9 and live on tips. Also in many states the waiters make less than minimum wage so $5 an hour plus tips. Its just the way it is.

Tipping is a great mechanism for several reasons:

1) It punishes/incentivises good service
2) It punishes/incentivises high quality products
3) It incentivises good services personell to seek out restaurants that offer highest quality products, thereby increasing likelihood of receiving tips
4) It punishes bad customers. A customer that doesn't tip and acts like an asshole will be treated worse. So it also incentivises customers to behave civilised
5) If you are dealing with transactions that involve personal service and often emotions (not being a grumpy asshole when dealing with customers) it is more often than not impossible to enforce good behaviour on an emotional level from the top down (the employer)
The employer and the employee (those acting in good faith and doing a good job) are both better off if they allow the employee to receive part of his income via tips.
This ensures high quality service for the employer, more so than having a fixed income only paid by the employee directly.

Tipping is a shitty American culture among many other retarded American things, but since America is here to stay, we all have to endure

>Waiters get paid minimum wage ~$9 and live on tips. Also in many states the waiters make less than minimum wage so $5 an hour plus tips. Its just the way it is

Minimum wage is not the same for waiters and other people, genius. They aren't getting paid less than minimum wage they are getting the minimum wage for waiters. No waiter is making $9 an hour plus tips at the average restaurant.

It should be phased out with legislation at the state level in the U.S. It's basically become a tax on decent people and a way for restaurants to push the blame to someone else for low wages.

Currently though if you go somewhere where tipping is expected and don't tip then you're a piece of shit. Unless you tell the server or whatever ahead of time not to expect a tip no matter how good their service is.

>in the US people get like $2 an hour to wait tables and the rest if income is tips.
Not my problem. Maybe you should get better labor laws in your "country".

Not all countries in Europe have tipping as a custom, but it started in jolly old England.

Initially Americans rejected it since it's a European custom and we're Americans, damn it, but somehow the custom caught on.

I think it's fucking stupid. You put in eight hours and receive a flat rate of pay. That's how shit is supposed to work.

ya those assholes....glad they include gratuity on groups

Tipping is an American thing because they don't pay workers enough money and boss is king in USA, so customers have to give workers salary instead of boss.

Who said it was your problem or was complaining you fucking faggot? I was telling you how it is. You're the dumbass complaining about American tipping while your fat ass sits in the UK. What does American tipping have to do with you anyways, retard?

not really

tipping culture ensures people don't let their service slip

also, as an American yourself, you retards do the same thing as us

>We should reject all European customs

So being white? You're rejecting that already lad

You are a fucking idiot. Thats what i fucking said. Did I ever say that waiters dont make minimum wage overall? I said they get paid less plus tips. Im saying they rely on the tips. In those states where they make less than minimum wage their paychecks are settled to make the statewide minimum wage if they dont get enough tips. What are you even talking about (((genius)))? So fuck right off faggot.

tipping is a scam by restaurant owners -- they're making YOU pay your waiter instead of them paying them properly.

You lose, the waiter loses, the restaurant owners win.

They lobbied governments for this and got it.
unreal.

>9$ an hour
I got that from back breaking work in warehouse. Worked my damn hands to the bone and the indoor easy job of serving food for guests is somehow wroth the same? Keep in mind that you have WAY lower taxes in the US so those 9$ will get you much more than in Denmark.

> Also in many states the waiters make less than minimum wage so $5 an hour
how is that possible? Isnt the minimum wage mandatory as the name implies? So arent these people breaking the law and if so then why arent they being prosecuted? If illegals then preferably hanged but deported will also suffice.

Lots of times the restaurants dont want to include gratuity on bigger parties because they have to pay taxes on it if they do. So its a risk. Either have the government take your money or have the cheapskates stiff you. At her restaurant they almost always charge gratuity on parties with old people or black people because they are the worst tippers.

It's because in most states it is perfectly legal to pay under the minimum wage(lowest they can go is $2.75~). Now that their pay is low they have to get the rest by tips. In my opinion this is good, since it will spark up competition for a higher tip, but of course there will be people that complain about it and force people to give a tip.

>08/10/2004/2001

claiming the free market caused the recent financial collapses is hilarious considering we are literally the first people to live under a globalized, centrally controlled banking cartel, the most unfree market possible.

>Thats what i fucking said.
Is it?
>"Did I ever say that waiters dont make minimum wage overall?"
>Also in many states the waiters make less than minimum wage

Yes you did, you fucking retard.

>Why is it that Burgers rely so much on other people's generosity? Why can't servers have a proper wage?
It makes them behave.
I;ve been out to eat in Europe, the servers are lazy fagots because they know they're set.
Paying an extra 20% is worth having a cute girl with massive milky tits who tries her best to please you instead of some slow ugly sheepfucker who sneers at you.

Servers having low wage is the problem they should take up with their employer, not me. Tipping is retarded.

lol no one in Denmark works for less that 20 dollars an hour unless your a Pole or jailbait

Maybe you don't realise it, but you are basically arguing like a commie.

It is none of your business to decide how two parties (employee and employer) voluntarily are going to work together

And, once tips are gone (even if the employers pay a higher salary to offset the loss of tips as source of income), all incentives to provide great customer service are gone as well.

That's why every communist country has failed. You leave now way for the best among any kind of profession to prosper more than others for working harder/smarter - everyone will adjust to the mean.

Welcome to niggerland service, where everyone is treated like shit and every product is mediocre shit.
Forcing such improvements from the top on a societal scale always fails. There is a reason tips are a mechanism used everywhere in the world, even if you don't understand why that is.
You should not interfere with that in any way, as there is no coercion involved in it.

Justice for Seth

depends on your age and what kind of deal you have with your employer.
Sure once you get past the 16-17s you get around 15-20$ pr hour.

Im sure it has to do with taxes etc. Im not exactly sure. I just asked my gf actually and shes confused about how it works too. The more money she makes in tips the less money she makes on her official minimum wage paycheck. She makes probably $40 an hour on a good night but her official paycheck is like $200. She gets the rest in cash.

on one hand it ensures the customer gets better service on the other hand it makes people working there depressed.
i started tipping more than i used to because it's
a terrible system but also don't go drinking too often so it works itself out idk

This burger tipping shit is nonsense.

Do Burgers and Burgers that complain about not getting any tips tip their
>first responders
>nurses
>ambulance drivers
>street cleaners
>people that clean other peoples shit up in general
>firemen
>cops

I guess not.

Are those people as vocal about it?

How much is a service of carrying some dishes and plates a few meters through a room worthy of tipping compared to the ones above?

Close to zero.

Fuck off and fight for higher wages.

Ideally, perhaps.

In America, though, it seems that tipping is done out of a cultural expectation, rather than for the reasons you suggest.

But the only reason that we're expected to tip is because their wages are shit. If we paid them minimum wage, tipping wouldn't be a fucking thing. But no, we don't wanna pay $2 or $3 more for our food so we don't end up tipping some retarded amount.

old people? really? I figured they would be better tippers. chinks are pretty bad, too

>(((overall)))) Also I said less than min wage + tips. Dont be a fucking retard and admit you started arguing with me for no reason. Fucking dumbass kys. How old are you faggot? You should get an underage ban.

No one who is legally employed in the USA makes less than minimum wage.

Without tips that worker will be fired and replaced with one that can earn enough tips so the owner doesn't have to pay regular minimum wage.

You think they'll be happier if it didn't matter to them if they interacted well or even exceptionally well with their customers?
Think again, how depressed were people in the Soviet union?
No incentives for anyone to do exceptional work. Everyone was just sitting around waiting for time to go by. What a great life!

>germans
>knowing anything about customer service
stopped when I saw your flag

I mean elderly people, over 70.

>$40 an hour
seems like a quite "livable" wage. Are there any truth to this narrative I always hear about people in low income jobs in the US suffering in the extreme?

>She gets the rest in cash.
seems like an over complicated system of paying someone for a simple service. I wonder why you people put up with it? Fierce competition from foreigners or just general culture?

its a very livable wage. She sometimes makes $500 in a night. More than I make. Of course other days she will work a busy dinner shift and make $40. It just depends on the night but on average she makes a good living wage.

Yeah I dont really get it.

yes but people who work at mcdonalds really get paid ~$9 per hour and get zero tips. That is basically an unlivable wage if you have any sort of family. Thats why people are clamoring for $15 minimum wage and the fast food places are just replacing them with computer kiosks. A minimum wage job should be for entry level workers and college students not most people.

Most people I see working at mcdonalds are middle aged Mexican men and women.

I think it's acceptable. If tipping wasn't required here I'd still do so if I thought the server was friendly. I don't like when places automatically charge you tip as a surcharge. If I got shitty service I shouldn't be required to tip via surcharge.

Also isn't the whole 20 % idea fucking retarded. Order something cheap for $10, server brings it to you, maybe pours you water or whatever a couple of times. Order say a more expensive dish at the same place for like 80 bucks, server does exactly the same amount of running however the tip is now 8 times more. Really activates my almonds.

$40 is a good period. If all she did was wait on that one group for a full 2 hours she was making the hourly equivalent of 40k a year.

A 50% tip on a person who nurses a $2 dollar cup of coffee and ties up a table for an hour is a shitty tip. A 5% tip on a thousand dollars for an hour or so is a great tip.

>muh $2/hr
Not this meme again. The employer has to make up the difference if the server's salary after tips is less than the minimum wage. The customer is the only one who gets screwed in this scenario.

The point is that the job she makes is not about great technical skills, it is about how well you can interact with customers and make sure they have a good time.
How would you ideally as an employer distinguish between two different employers in a job that doesn't require any specific technical knowledge?
The answer is you don't. You use an incentive system where all the customers get to vote on who does a good job and who does not.
If not enough customers vote for your girlfriend she'd have to self deport from that job.
But in her case she obviously does it well, therefore she makes a good income.
For me this mechanism seems ideal.

Waitress jobs and the like are supposed to be for teenagers/students or housewives looking to supplement income and not be a primary source of income for a household. We need women back in the fucking kitchen.

I always felt like they were cheating me when I visited the US. "ahh you sound funny and look foreign! Just give me 20-25% of the price of your dinner please!" I guess you get used to it. Did not really feel any improvement in the service either. Especially in the more expensive restaurants for some reason.

Thanks the info. It might be a bit overplayed then the whole "muh poor low income folks"?

>Most people I see working at mcdonalds are middle aged Mexican men and women.
The horror.
>really get paid ~$9 per hour and get zero tips. That is basically an unlivable wage if you have any sort of family.
is it really? Dont you yanks only paid like 30-35% in tax? Everything was so damn cheap when I was on a road trip through the south.

I think that it's damaging
>Waiters and people who deliver food get more dependant on income from tips
>They become more entitled
>Their boss can afford to pay them less
>Ugly fucks have to change job because people don't give them high tips (although this might actually be a good thing)

I generally tip barstaff, when I get a drink at the bar I tell them "and one for yourself", they take 50p etc and you get served faster next time around

Also private cabs I tip, but generally not Hackneys as they already charge you just for sitting in their fucking cab before you even move off

>Yuge.

Yes that does suck at more expensive places, although if you are buying an $80 meal you probably arent worried about the tip too much and they should give you much better service than a normal place.

What is really insane in America is the food server tipping culture. If you meet someone whos a server they will always try to spy on what you tip to make sure you are giving the "poor" server a good one then lecture you because "you dont know what its like to work in the food service industry". Then they will preach about how they will sometimes give a 30% tip because food servers deserve it. Its really infuriating. Im sure some other burgers on here will agree that they know people like that IRL.

a 20% tip is for really good service. I usually tip 18% and if the service was subpar 10% or less. Sometimes people have bad days or its not their fault though. If it is obviously their fault and they are being a cunt ill tip 0.

Also never ever tip for takeout. Thats another extremely annoying thing that food service workers will try to guilt trip you into doing. Im not fucking tipping any for a guy who bagged my meal up and gave me zero table service. My GF sometimes tips $5 for takeout orders.

Pizza man gets tipped $4 maximum no matter what the price of the order.

I stopped eating at restaurants, all the Bernouts were acting like niggers after Nov.8. Food quality in restaurants has gone to shit as well buy a chest freezer, fill it with steak, fuck the restaurant jew.

Nope, not in Texas. You make more than $20 in tips a week, and they only have to pay the $2/hr.

I only tip for two reasons.

1) To flex my money at a girl who I am literally too pussy and scared of to actually speak to.

2) Because I want to come back to the restaurant and I want them to remember me and treat me well next time.

This does not include fuckin "tip jars" at the counter that really serve no purpose, I'm talking about an actual sit down restaurant. If someone comes and takes good care of me, wants to bring me some freebies or whatever, I'll tip for sure.

I'd much rather tip a waiter $10 for bringing me a $25 glass of scotch and not putting on my bill, than pay a restaurant $25 and still end up tipping anyway.

Smart waiters will comp food and drinks for tips.

true. It was 4 hours minimum wage and $40 tips so around $76. It just sucks when you are expecting around $200 in tips. That was one of the worst nights shes had. She came home crying and I had to deal with it. Was annoying.

True dat.

(cont'd) but also I live in Commiefornia, so everyone here makes min wage (at least) and then pockets 100% of cash tips (and doesn't report them on taxes)

I know in places like AZ and shit your boss can add up all your tips and basically deduct that from your pay and then only pay you the difference between that and minimum wage, so some people actually make like $3 an hour. This is fucking stupid, I'm not gonna subsidize your employees because you're too cheap to pay them.

No, they actually don't, you retard.

I tip the pizza guy cause I know for some places they have to pay for their own gas. But yeah I'm not tipping him fuckin $10

true, thats a good analysis of it. You do need to be able to organize and time things well to work large parties and that is a little extra skill needed over regular waiters but its really not that hard. People also are incredibly rude and inconsiderate.

and who ends up getting fucked there?
The employee.
You sure showed the system with your scruples.

Fucking retard. Please refrain from going out to eat anywhere, but fast food.
Cheap fuck.

True.

Germans don't know shit about customer service.

Hence another reason why I don't tip.

Dude chicks make a FUCK TON of money as servers. My gf used to pour beer at a middle of the line bar/restaurant and she made like $40 an hour after tips, and $30 of that was tax free cash. Fucking ridiculous.

Now she works in an office and makes like $20 an hour, but at least she's not a bar whore for a profession.

Any female server that complains about male privilege is either ugly or a poor server. I know plenty of chicks that make more than friends that went to 4 year universities and all they do is serve food/drinks, and they pocket that and don't report cash on their taxes. Taxation = theft.
