He was a general for the United States before the civil war and was overall a pretty well-liked man. He joined the Confederacy for a few reasons, but I don't remember them. He didn't really agree with slavery but felt like it was important enough to curtail the authority of the feds ie muh states' rights. He was pretty much the second most important man in the confederacy behind Jefferson Davis, the confederate president. Lee was the one who signed the peace treaty and continued to be an important figure in post-war America, with his rival Grant going on to be the next president.
tl;dr he was an alright dude and wasn't really that bad of a guy, but nigs are nigging out because muh confederate raycis
