Can somebody give me a rundown on the various theories of salvation (ie penal substitution, Christus Victor, etc), and which most conforms to the teachings of the Church? I always get conflicting answers. When I look into the Church Fathers, most seem to endorse Christus Victor, although later doctors and scripture itself tends toward atonement.
And if the atonement theory is true, wouldn't it be satisfactory for Christ to simply die and not resurrect?

Thank you for the answers. It seems that many modern Christians are more lax in regards to this subject, accepting multiple theories to be true. It seems that Orthodoxy is a great deal more stingy with this, always weary of the Latins. I find that it is probably more important to understand the necessity of the Passion, than to understand it's mechanisms; it is sufficient to believe in it, and to understand that one is saved by it, and only it.
