Probably to mask gunshots I live in a semi-shitty East Bay Area city in California, and I remember hearing a few years back that criminals and gangs were lighting off fireworks to drown out gunshots a little bit, to make the cops guess every time whether loud bangs were fireworks or gunshots, to make it hard to tell which direction the actual gunshots were coming from, etc.
