I think a valid approach to dealing with these, would be better monitoring of extremist preachers, considering a lot of these terrorist attacks are carried out by people who are inspired by these. One of the major problems is exactly that religion (specifically Islam) plays such a central role to a lot of Muslims, and I think this prevents them from "participating" in modern western society.
The removal of religion of from central parts of e.g., law and daily life, has been a major positive aspect of the development of the west, I think. The same needs to happen with Islam.
