Te Anau and Manipuori are beautiful towns surrounded by absolutely stunning scenery (mountains lush forests lakes)
Oamaru has a thriving steampunk culture
Dunedin has a thriving student culture and is the best city in NZ
Queenstown is a winter playground with skiing surrounded by LOTR scenery like snowy mountains

Te Anau and Queenstown look amazing. Gonna research all of them though.

Dunedin looks a bit too large for me. I prefer really small towns.

Depends on how big a community you want to live in. The West Coast has a lot of small villages with great scenery; Haast (no cellphone coverage there though), Fox, Franz, Ross, Punakaiki, Karamea etc. On the East Coast you have Takaka, Picton, Kaikoura (plentiful jobs as currently being rebuilt from an earthquake), Akaroa, Methven and too many more to list here. Really comes down to your priorities.

West coast is one of the rainiest spots on the planet

On average you're right but for example Westport gets only twice as much rain as Queenstown. Easy to find a job in Queenstown but impossible to find somewhere to live (like, next level accommodation crisis there worse than Auckland) and exactly the reverse in Westport.

Honestly OP you should just come here, do a roadtrip of the whole island (I've done so several times and it can easily be done in ten days) and find out where you prefer. There are a lot of places that are great to visit but I wouldn't want to live for various reasons.

Auckland and Wellington* have ridiculous house prices because everyone in the North Island wants to live there (mostly because of the jobs available there). The rest of the island has low house prices because no one wants to live in those places (entirely justified). If you don't like immigrants or Maori then you won't like the North Island. South Island is very white and the few Maori are bro-tier.

*Wellington is also our version of San Francisco in terms of liberals.

OP, I recommend Wanganui. It's a good size, not too big or small, and has a nice atmosphere. Castlecliff is one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet too right on your door step.

Auckland isn't as bag as most of the fag boys on here say because most of the haven't been out their mamma's basement. Places I recommend you investigate are Cambridge, Martinborough, Methven, Cromwell, Oamaru, Queenstown, Wanaka, Arrowtown. South Island is more based than the North.
