Has anyone looked into renting a house recently? I wish nothing but bad things upon the people artificially manipulating such a necessity.

Buying as house as an investment has never been viable in any "normal" economic situation, sort of like the Australia housing market right now. It's not going to be this way forever and it's only become this way in the last 10-15 years, before that for 100 years there was no investment with a home.

The worst part isn't the fact that this has driven up rental costs - the worst part is that all these upper-middle class boomers buying up cheap starter homes and turning them into "investment properties" has driven up housing costs in the surrounding areas and completely removed all the nice affordable little houses completely off the market.

My wife and I have spent the last year trying to find a house in my hometown - when my parents bought their first home in the late 80s they found a nice 2BR 1BA in a quiet neighborhood for $24K. Today the cheapest home in the same area is a 3BR, 1BA for $190K - housing costs in most areas now are outpacing inflation by 300-400%. It's fucking absurd.

Doing so over time increases your credit rating. Which allows you to borrow more.
