We're a large mining operation in the contiguous US. You work as a laborer for a few years and then become a machine operator making more, and then eventually a supervisor if you want it. Hell, you can work at your local stone quarry for 20 something per hour and sit in an AC truck cab all day listening to radio and smoking.

Got into machining after high school. After 8 years of working my way up from $10/hour to $20/hour I just landed a job with a major aerospace company for $28/hour+ a 3k signing bonus. Jobs are out there, but the thing is you have to earn them and be better than your peers.

I have some stick welding experience, factory working experience, and a perfect driving record, though I don't have heavy duty mechanical or truck-driving time under my belt. I'm a fast learner though.

The government should honestly do a program of guaranteed employment. That is, put every US citizen to work with a pay that will be enough to pay for food, shelter, and a family. It's not like there isn't work to be done in the world - there are bridges to repair, science to research; it's just that corporations aren't putting people to do that work.
