Its far superior to consciousness as a "basis for meaning" too, since consciousness is contingent upon it (but that's a tangent). You realize, that within the framework of your biology, and the physical laws underpinning it, you have to decide the meaning of your existence, correct? But you aren't given infinite margins within which to make that decision: you have to preserve the foundation of consciousness, and preserve it in its current form, or else you lose the space for meaning of any kind, not just the kind you prefer.

My dad did exactly this
He grew up poor in a family of 10 and worked on the farm until he went off to work in the factories when he was 14; he was arrest at 18 and escaped from the Communist government shortly after
He lived life on the run until finally escaping to America where he met my mother
When I turned 18 and always bitched about him about my teenage depression, he knew nothing of the sort; he said it was impossible for him to relate with me. I thought he was a mad fool and an idiot; uncaring and unwilling to learn to relate with his own son
Then I grew up
Now I'm nearing 25 with a medical degree under my belt and a savings in the bank
I look back on those days and I imagine what my dad must have done to get where he is today even though it's not even that impressive by American standards. But he made it, and he loves his kids, his wife (my mother), and he always worked his ass off to make sure there was food on the table and shoes on our feet

I used to look back and think I was going to be so much more than my father
Then I came to the age where I understood and ask myself "Do I even have what it takes??"

Now I'm looking at the world completely different. O what a time it must have been where humans were busy and happy in their toil and didn't have time to ponder the endless frivolities of life: where man was happy to eat, drink, and be merry with the wife he has and the family he has made
