I am italian, but I have blue eyes, extremely fair skin with some freckles and blonde/reddish hair. I think Italy can claim cultural descendence from the romans, but not genetical. If you go and take a look the vast majourity of italian population is like the rest of europe if you eliminate the south. The reason being that at the end of the roman empire native italian population was slaughtered and substituted throughout the centuries with german/northern european people(see pic for reference).

It's not a claim, it's natural to consider it a phase of the history of the Italic people, but it's not nearly as important and relevant to the average Italian as the period of the Italian city states, as it's the foundation of today's regionalism.
It's relevant to fascists in a way, since it's been pushed during the regime in order to give modern Italian something they could identify in from the tip to the bottom of the boot, which is key if you want to make a centralized government in a nation like ours, but it's still far from something Italians usually LARP.

Answer to both, the graph is different from yours, it just highlights difference in population size. I just mean that if you look at modern day italy, difference with ancient representation of romans is stark (excluding south), and you are much more likely to find widely european features in general population.
