Pretty much this. They are mainly young males addicted to a drug called captagon, which they control the distribution of. The reason they fight the Kurds so much more than anyone else is because the Kurds are a rival narco-gang. It's not all that different from what's going on south of the border in Mexico really, they just smuggle drugs into Europe, Turkey, and the wealthy gulf states instead of the US. They recently began fighting the Taliban to try and seize control of their opiate drug production. The reason they are dead-set on toppling Assad is because he stands in the way of the easiest smuggling routes into Europe and Turkey.
