Because they signed a treaty with the other great powers of the world that gave it to them. What other justification would there be? And what is you're teacher talking about that sudeten Germans didn't consider themselves Germans. What else would they have considered themselves? People who spoke German were German that's all was to it. Bohemia was part of the Germanic states and confederations for over a 1000 years.

After the breakup of the Austrian Empire. Millions of ethnic Germans were forced to be oppressed minorities in countries that shouldn't have even existed (Czechoslovakia). Furthermore, much of the Austrian industrial base was effectively handed over to the Czechs. The Czech nationalist movement during WW1 was closely aligned with the Bolsheviks as well.

Every conflict Germany got into was over ethnic Germans in the land basically, and in Poland they were being discriminated against allegedly pretty badly, which the allies knew about and didn't care, and Poland dropped out of the League of Nations apparently because they required minority rights laws that Poland didn't respect. The conflict apparently went on for years while the nazis tried to deescalate in vain, and Poland apparently denied access to that north eastern plot of Germany land, cutting Germany off from its own territory.

It was at the express desire of the Czechs that the Sudeten German areas were included in the new State at the Peace Conference. It must be conceded that the Czech wish to possess so rich an industrial country was a natural one. Not only did the Sudeten [51] Germans play an important part in industrial affairs, but they were also large landowners in the German-speaking area, while their financial and banking houses had an influence in the economic field commensurate with that which they erected in the field of production.

With the object of weakening German economic power the Czechs started a campaign against this key position. At the same time the policy of Czech penetration was begun, with the object of converting the purely German-speaking areas into mixed districts.

The prevalence of large estates in the Sudeten country, as opposed to the relatively small number of small holdings, has led to agitation in favour of redistribution of land, even in pre-war days. This measure of land reform, however that may be, was undertaken by the Czechs soon after the creation of the Republic. They were not, however, actuated by a zeal for social reform; their action was purely national. "Land reform" was exploited by the Czechs as a means to the expropriation of non-Slav soil, and in order to permit of the settlement of Czechs in the German-speaking districts. While the Government claimed to be taking from the rich in order to give to the poor, they made no attempt at an equitable redistribution of the confiscated acres. Over 1,250,000 acres of German land were expropriated between 1921 and 1932, with the semi-officially admitted aim of weakening the German position. This land was acquired by the State against paid or promised indemnities amounting to a mere fraction [52] of its real value. Ninety-six per cent. of this land, all of which had been in German ownership, was allotted to Czech farmers.

They were soon followed by Czech business men and commercial travellers and attempts were made to introduce Czech working men. Wherever a Czech appeared a German lost his occupation, whether as official or labourer. In other words, he was deliberately deprived of his means of livelihood. Between 1918 and 1938 150,000 Czechs were "dumped" in German-speaking areas, giving rise to a commensurate increase in German unemployment figures.

As far as your ignorance about Sudetes goes, Czechoslovakia gained sovereignty in 1918 with Germans in border areas as well as other places with huge German minorities (Brno city, Iglau, Prague) all pledging loyalty to newly formed state. German-ethnicity people in Czechoslovakia had not that much in common with Germans from Reich since they were living here (as you stated) for decades forming their own society. They got fanatic by propaganda (see "Heim ins Reich") and used as an excuse to break down democratic successful state.

there were huge tensions between czechs and germans after ww I in borderlands especially but that was product of collapse of Austro-Hungarian empire and old world order in general. Germans were invig in our lands because
1) they were said to come by Czech rulers in 11th century because vast parts of Bohemia were unoccupied
2) they came in during decades of attempts to germanize Bohemia

Used to be empty because it's mostly "highlands" and no Czechs/Slavs lived there except for few cities that were on ancient trade routes. In the middle ages germanic people moved there and created some great cities out of nothing. Most of those cities became rich after industrial revolution because muh German work ethics. People who lived there were mostly germanic. After Czech uncucked themselves in 1850 and rebuild their slavic identity (after 1620s official language was only German) Germans in Sudetenlad felt alienated from them and naturaly gravitated towards their German brothers
