You notice it far more in software as there are so many jobs to fill now in that industry. Knowing how to program isn't really all that difficult. It still won't matter, code exists for just about every thing you can think of. You might tweak a function here and there, but for the most part, you are just putting together a puzzle with other peoples' pieces. It's not like the 80s and 90s where you had to build and paint the pieces yourself.

Being a general programmer is not good enough. Coming from a heavily scientific background and using development to build models and knowing what can be automated is where the money is.

To expand on this, I think programming and scripting today are like being able to write. You need it as a tool for a lot of things, but unless you are exceptional it won't be your primary skill.

And if they weren't any good at it, huge corporations wouldn't waste millions of dollars on events exclusively designed to get them interested and hired. I know some kids who graduated from college and couldn't get a programming gig, but could get a QA gig. So they start there. Not such bad training.

Then you move on to front-end. The real back-end programmers are doing the business logic. Architecturally, you are doing the "View" part of one of the architectural models (MVC, MVP, MVVM etc.) Probably in the Javascript framework flavor of the month.

Anyone who types into Excel "=A1+A2" is in some sense a programmer.

To be at an underfunded startup and lay out its architecture very quickly, but have it scalable enough that it can handle success, and then build it out as the business grows - that takes skill.

To dive into a huge existing spaghetti codebase and be able to add features without destabilizing things - it takes skills.

It's kind of ephemeral what separates the beginner programmer from the expert programmer. You can see it in the results though.

Interacting with the business correctly and giving them what they want/need is important as well. An average programmer good at that can often beat a superstar programmer who is not good at that.

Every White person should know C/C++, Java and byte code languages are useless. Native code programming will not succumb to passing trends like byte code programming will. Java and C# is cancer.

I've been in and around the games industry for about fifteen years now and have only ever seen about six competent woman coders and one that I would take over 75% of the male coders I've worked with.

Same goes for asset modelers, tech artists, level designers, writers, scripters, VFX artists, animators, producers, etc...

There's just not that many of them to start with and most of the ones I've met and/or worked with usually are from big budget studios and publishers that can take the hit financially for hiring a bunch of chicks for PR purposes. BioWare is a good example of this (although it's really hitting them now).

In smaller, boutique developers you can't afford second rate anybodies to make something since usually one misstep ends your company and most of the time women end up making second rate employees.

They make up most of the days off taken, lost work time incidents, and tardiness dismissals. If "progressive" people want to try and ram as many women as they can into the tech or game industry, all it's going to cause is resentment towards women in general.

Just my two cents.

None of you know what your jobs are. You can't define them to normies you don't know what you're doing.

I'll try and explain. Writing code these days requires a few perspectives. 1. How quickly can you weite the code (woman are slow) and 2. How well can it be maintained and 3. How performant can you write the algorithms.

Now tie all that into millions of lines of code typical in a modern platform where many pieces effect many other areas.

One piece of code might effect 20 or 30 operations. Now you get into architecture where you balance maintenance of said common code with hardware resources using it. Then there's database design that requires considerations for scaling (how will the system behave when it grows). The database ties into the middle tier that queries the data.

It can't get really complicated and thoughtful considerations are necessary in order to keep a system humming well. Can woman do it? Not very well. They're slow, sloppy and don't seem, from my experience of 15 years, to take into consideration all the moving parts to make good decisions.

I've had to clean up a number of messes by female hands before. They slow us down just as a female himing with a group of soliders would.

When you get ten business guys together and five American-born programmers, it's difficult for the businessmen to explain what they want, translated into software.

Now take in Indians who can barely speak English, whose code sucks, who are 9 hours time difference. It is not as easy as it sounds.

If there were a lot of Indians who spoke good English and more importantly were good programmers it would be different. But it isn't like that.

As a software developer I'd say we're going towards a point when it will be the only kind of job outside of artist.
