That stat table is also a bit misleading, since what counts as "Chicago" is a huge geographic area, with a huge population. The north and west of Chicago bring down the murder rate substantially. Downtown and the South Side are easily as bad as St. Louis and Baltimore.

I'm originally from Chicago and one of my best friends grew up with me there but went to SLU for college.
He went from a progressive liberal to a racial realist real quick. His description of why STL is so shitty is because it doesn't segregate like Chicago does. Chicago is pretty safe if you stay north of 18th and East of Kedzie for the most part. But STL can apparently go from fine to complete shit and back again in the span of a few blocks. I'll take half the city being a no-go zone if it means I can live in my nice prodominently white neighborhood and walk at night without fear

The City of Saint Louis is independent of Saint Louis County because they didn't want to be subject to the rules of the largely suburban (read: white) outlying cities. It has not boded well for them.
