We have that in Australia and New Zealand.

Unless your buying from an owner operator, a manufacturer or somewhere upmarket good luck getting good customer service in New Zealand.

At my local Chase bank they are trying to get rid of human tellers as well both inside and outside the bank. Other major banks are doing the same

Good. I hate going to grocery stores that don't have these. Line is always longer and moves slower when there is a human cashier. There are always fewer cashiers working than necessary to avoid lines because the store understaffs. Cashiers always required to give you some spiel about some promotion the store is doing or sell you on their loyalty card.

Yes, it's same here. Usually there is a sign saying "15 items or less". If you have a full cart you're supposed to go to the human checkout.

this is how it is already here. there are maybe 20 machine lanes depending on how big the place is, and maybe 3 humans sometimes just for people who are lonely. the human's main job is to stand by the machine lanes and point our which ones are free and help with their admin card when the machine spazzes out

At my Walmart grocery store, there are only two actual cashier lines. The rest (about 10 of them) are self checkout. It's a lot easier tbqh.
We have a ton of these at my local walmart. As far as i know there hasn't been any reduction in cashiers, they just help keep things running more smoothly and reduce lines.
even 10 less than competent cashiers is better than 10 machines. 2 people watching the 10 machines (lets say 4 of which will break) will not be as efficient to the customer as 10 humans. but it will be better for the bottom line which is all companies care about. but don't pretend it's better for "shorter queues" and other crap like that.

I will say that back when I first started seeing the self checkout machines they sucked. They sucked big time. The scale under the bagging area was very sensitive. I felt like if it thought there was as little as one ounce out of place it would spasm. But I haven't had that issue in a long time. I've noticed that they've become way more reliable. What takes me the longest is looking up the stupid codes for fruit and veggies. I not brain dead cashier has the codes memorized after one week on the job, so they're way faster at ringing them up. I don't know why they don't put barcodes on most fruits and vegetables. Better yet put cameras on the machines that can recognize what produce you're trying to buy. And then place the produce on the scale and get charged accordingly.
Also, I don't know why you should even have to go through a checkout... Put a card reader on the shopping carts, and have things get auto rang up as you toss it into the basket. And when you walk out of the store have it charge you. Seems more simple and not very complicated.

I've never used the auto check out at Walmart, until last night.
Check out was going smooth until I tried to scan my ExtenZe extra strength, but it failed to scan. Had to ask the little Hispaniola lady to help me scan my dick pills. The lady proceeds to hold the product in the air to view it for all to see.
Simply turns it and it scans no problem.

My Walmart here in Idaho has probably 20 or more of em. They're quite nice. And yeah yeah Walmart sucka I get it. I go in for the clearance stuff. Nab some vodka time to time but also find things like a WRT 1900AC v2 router for 60 bucks or a 10" powered Sony subwoofer for 12 bucks. So fuck the meme, gimme self checkout and deals.

We currently have the technology to automate most service jobs. Right now, the value of having a person do the job is more than they cost of paying them. If the socialists raise minimum rage beyond inflation like they want, then companies would automate. It's pretty simple retard.

Twenty of these machines do the work of two cashiers. And they still take one human to watch over every ten or so.
And there's no checking out with a cart full of groceries. You have to put everything on the scale and cannot put it in your cart. If you have more than a couple bags of stuff, these are not for you.
Here's an idea: Open a couple more lanes with human cashiers.
