Reducing benefits can't be a "punishment" because nothing is being taken from them, they are still receiving free welfare bankrolled by those who actually work for a living. I work a blue collar job full time. Labor intensive and most of the time I am outside in the elements. I sometimes go to the grocery store near my job for fresh food during my lunch. I seen a guy once buy 20$ worth of candy and chips and pull out the EBT card to pay for it all. This was a able bodied man. Needless to say it infuriated me.
A couple of weeks later in the same grocery store I seen a man buy some fresh chicken and 1 bottle of water, pulled out the EBT card. That did not piss me off as much.
It was the fact the people are abusing the system us working pay into and they are buying fucking trash with it. There should be mandatory drug testing, checking in proving you are actually looking for a job and overall a cut off date if you are able bodied.

Nice things are an incentive for people to get off their ass and work for them. Survival should be, too, but basic survival is something that can push people harder to break laws and rules if they believe they have no other option.
Last thing you want to do is remove incentives for people to work and get off the government tit. So no, you can't have nice things on other people's dime, it should be on yours.

I think your conception of who has a claim to what money is simplistic. The money they spend props up businesses. When you spend money someone else gets the money. Also, a lot of people in finance do far more harm to society (without any real productivity) than welfare monkeys that basically blow all their money on supporting businesses. Money goes round and round. Raging about how your tax money goes to someone's welfare is to be distracted of the bigger picture. The welfare people are not the ones hoarding wealth and causing economic damage (unless criminals).
At this point of development, the threshold for basic necessities is different than it was say 100 years ago. It makes no sense to deprive people of basic things just for the sake of depriving them. In fact, it's evil precisely because it's a question of depriving people out of spite. The idea that a fridge is a sign of not being poor in a 21st century first-world context is laughable.
