Why was this election so close?

I can see why Obama won both his elections, why clinton lost in 2016 and why Macron won but why did May almost lose? There has been no pendulum swing, no economic crisis and this election was supposed to sweep up left voting leave voters that wanted a stable government.

Was it the youth turnout? What have the Tories done recently to piss so many people off?

austerity politics does not convince people
why?
because it doesn't work. guaranteed there will be another election by the end of 2018

She had muslim terror attacks

Her solution? Regulate the internet

Heartily deserved to lose

Muslims are the cause of terror not the internet

dementia tax

Her manifesto said it would take people's houses to pay for their care in old age. Also her wooden performances in every tv interview

People who shouldnt have been able to vote, I.E faggot fuccboi 16 year olds, were allowed to vote

>cant buy alcohol until 18
>can change the political course of a country at 16

May did lose. No majority and less seats than she started with while having been predicted a supermajority.

>There has been no pendulum swing, no economic crisis and this election was supposed to sweep up left voting leave voters that wanted a stable government.

This is where you're wrong. Brexit happened because party lines were not drawn, put them back in and the old labour vs tory dynamic comes into play, Corbyn managed to swing the youth vote (70%+ turnout) AND win back a chunk of the old labour voters who went to UKIP. Old labour means both older age wise but old labour politics (60s/70s).

>What have the Tories done recently to piss so many people off?

May said there would be no election 7 times, then called one saying she needed a bigger majority. She hurled abuse at Corbyn but refused to debate him. She rarely engaged with the public, holding very tightly organized rallies. She didn't do many interviews, despite how many car crash interviews Corbyn&co had, they were on the airwaves while the Tories weren't. May has also been hammered for cuts to the police when she was Home Secretary in the wake of 3 terrorist attacks in 3 months.

She's lucky the SNP pissed off a lot of scots who went Tory, otherwise we'd be facing a Labour lead coalition.

THE YOUTS

may fucked up, and commies gonna commie

>Labour has lost the third election in a row
>"close"

If Scotland hadn't gone partly Tory we would have no potential Tory coalition or even a minority government.

>students voting
I'm a student, but the people I see are so self-entitled, why should the UK taxpayer pay for a degree in fashion studies?

there are a lot of reasons, but partly because labour had a charismatic leader who genuinely believed in his policies and wasn"t afraid to talk to the public whereas the tories had an autistic birdwoman.

you could also argue that the conservative strategy of neglecting southern constituencies in order to go for more northern, more traditionally labour ones wasn't a great idea, although after the referendum i could understand the reasoning

>thinks she will win anyways
>barely campaigns
>tries to play it safe
>DOESN'T ATTEND DEBATES
>campaigns on "strong and stable" but isn't very visible in the public eye and doesn't project strength
>labour had a very effective campaign as far as getting turnout
>etc.

>they would have won if they didn't lose

Because her campaign, as well as the way she runs her government, was/is an absolute mess that is anything but stable.

It was easy for Corbyn to capitalize on blatant u-turns and lies. London terror attack also saw May attacked hard for cutting the police force, and I think that also hurt her at the polls

The Tories failed to get a majority, that means they lost.

Had they lost another 10-15 seats we would be looking at a Labour government in coalition.

Crap manifesto, crap campaign, weak on terrorism, may still pushing her Internet agenda from when she was home secretary, called an unnecessary election to take place at a time when all the brainwashed remainer students were off uni and at home to vote in their parents constituencies in the home counties.

Zero charisma and a misread of who brexiteers would vote for

>Had they lost another 10-15 seats we would be looking at a Labour government in coalition.

They didn't though, so why even bother saying that?

>Still trust woman in charge

When is white people going to learn that woman can't handle politics?

Because you mocked the notion of this being a close election. It's a very fucking close election.

May threatened the internet , Neets went out and voted .

The way things are going there'll be another one by next week.

>Terrorism
2 big terrorist attacks in the weeks before the election. May was Home Secretary and cut lots of police numbers. With that, she was away selling weapons to the Saudis just a couple of weeks before the attacks. While that was happening, for the first time I started seeing the media question the Saudis links to terrorism, which I doubt helped.
>Disastrous manifest launch.
She tried fucking not-particularly-well-off OAPs, so instead of being able to use them to boost her vote, they probably went to Labour instead. Then she did a U-turn within a day, I think. When your slogan is "strong and stable" flipping that quickly doesn't project the right message.
>Debates
She sent Amber Rudd in her place, while Corbyn turned up (he also gave a good debate desu).
>Censorship
Probably didn't help attract the right-ish leaning young.

It's also interesting to look at the actual break down of the vote.
>Tories increased their overall vote share by 6%
But lost 12 seats
>Labour increased their overall vote share by 10%
And gained 31 seats

So this election was pretty much fought in Lab/Con marginals. So, it was probably the attempt to screw OAPs out of their benies that did it for her more than anything else.

Results matter, doesn't change the fact that labour have just lost their third election in a row

Promise young, middle-class (((students))) free shit and they'll turn out

Yes, but it was close, you said it wasn't although it objectively is.

The way Brexit's been going, I suspect it'll probably end with a series of treaties that will kinda restore something similar to the status quo anyway.

It's not like you guys were really part of the EU in the first place since you still had the pound sterling?

It was rigged. Duh. You didn't think the elites would just sit by and twiddle their thumbs after Brexit and Trump's victory did you?

More like screw over your core base of pensioners and they'll fuck you.

dementia tax.

fighting terrorism by censoring and monitoring the internet.

using brexit as a ransom to gain more seats.

what a bloody stupid woman.

>She had muslim terror attacks
>Her solution? Regulate the internet
This. How retarded can she be? She had brexit behind her back, and yet did everything she could to fuck over herself.

Can someone explain bong politics to me? Tories? Labour?

Tories = Cuckservatives, more like the Democrats than the Republicans.

Labour = Literally run by Marxists at the moment and they almost toppled the cuckservative government last night.

Current situation is Tories don't have a majority of seats and will have to try and form a coalition with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP from Northern Ireland) which will give them a very very small majority to govern with.

If they can't work with the DUP we face a minority government (trying to govern without enough seats to pass legislation) and either/or another election this year.

The voting age for this election was 18.....

Tories had a terrible manifesto that put off a lot of older voters, ie their key demographic. Also May's refusal to attend the debates didn't help her cause. Labour had a good campaign and Corbyn appeals to young voters, increasing their turnout.

the media guilt tripped the public out of brexit, leave is purely a far-right racist stance.

Didn't you pick up on the fact that May was deliberately trying to sabotage her campaign? This previously good orator flopped and fumbled every chance, and made suspiciously bad PR stunts. Also what is going through your head when you have high approval rating and you introduce shit like:

> Lets repeal the hugely unpopular sport of fox hunting
> Fuck old people, our biggest voters, over on the pensions
> Police the internet, that'll prove fucking popular
> The best way to phrase harsher punishment for terrorists is "End human rights"
> etc...
> Couple that with Comrade GibsMeDat appealing to economically illiterate students, nigs, paks, etc... With lavish, outlandish spending promises and it is not hard to see what went wrong

She was a huge Remainer; Hillary with the label Conservative. She sabotaged her campaign because she has the same damned ideals as anyone in Brussels.

A globalist or a commie. Real sweet choice here lads!

Because she talked about fox hunting, reducing pensioners' payouts, dementia tax, kissed the arse of islam, did not reduce brown immigration by any significant numbers, allows PC culture to flourish, allows non whites to practice their shitty cultures here even though we supposedly have laws against polygamy, child and animal abuse, and seemed like a shifty globalist cunt through and through. We hate Labour, we hate what they did to the country, but when Labour promise "free stuff" who do you think all the mongs are going to flock to?

It wasn't just "free shit" this is a fallacy I see from conservatives all the time.

One of the defining features of leftism (not American liberal leftism, but the anarchic type that is popular in Greece) is solidarity.

Some people are genuinely motivated by the vision of a cohesive society in which endless corporate profits are constrained, in which people live in an open, trusting society with as little discrimination as possible. "Free stuff" is not why people go left. People go left because they believe in their own status as an empathetic, decent person. Whether they are or not is beside the point, if they believe themselves to be a certain way

Looking the current state of the world, i would kill for college kids to graduate with fashion studies instead of sjw

well put, cunt.

Tories - a mish-mash of socially conservative right wing authoritarian types, blended with economic liberals of various stripes, minarchists and Old money. Their voters tend to be either wealthy people who resent having to look after any but their own or people who imagine that they'd be wealthy if it weren't for x other group. Virtually all the Tories I know believe that people "get what they deserve". Most American Politicians would feel comfortable in the Tory party

Labour - another mixed blend, Socially they trend to the left although to what degree is variable some think that people should just be left alone for the most part, many more think people should be made to get along and if that means restrictions on speech or media so be it. Despite being theoretically secular, the party seems to attract both the progressive and reactionary religious types where the conservatives usually vote Tory. SO basically, lentil eating pacifists, moderate reformists and belligerent revolutionaries all under one umbrella. Economically the party is in a cold war with itself fighting over the continuation of neo-liberalism (generally the nu-labour reformist view) or a return to Keynesian economic policy (every one else)

Lib Dems - Socially liberal economically neo-liberal, quite a lot of overlap with some labour factions. Got into bed with the Tories in 2010 believing they could use them to push voting reform as they usually had a significant proportion of votes (usually around a quarter of the vote) but hardly any seats (usually 8-12%). Partly as a result of reneging on their promise vote against Tuition fees and mostly because their voters felt that joining up with the Tories was a betrayal of their ideals things have not gone well for them

UKIP - Sup Forums or more charitably Oswald Mosley after carving of Ayn Rands faces and trying to wear it as a mask

Greens - a lot of overlap with labour and the lib-dems + Greenpeace - brain

Yeah I felt like this was her downfall.
She basically outright stated that she had no solution.
Who wants a PM like that.

All those talking about the police or benefits or brexit are wrong.

The elite, (((them))), the EU etc all pitched in to figure out how they could steal our tactics for Brexit and Trump and repurpose them for the left and socialism.

Corbyn's campaign was strikingly similar to Trump's.

The media pretty much only spoke about him.

Can go into this more if needed.

Also whatever happened to those poll cards that were stolen?

Want proof? Read all the pro-Corbyn posts here. They popped up overnight and in huge numbers. If brit/pol/ really did swap to support May there would've been more discussion regarding it

>Muslims killing your people
>Promise to ban muslims
>Win

>Muslims killing your people
>Promise to ban the Internet
>Lose

Gee I wonder

>I was just pretending to be retarded

Election's over, you don't need to larp as a paranoid schizophrenic anymore

>go back to leftypol

Young "people" voted and they're usually left wing

It was a depressing, uninspiring campaign from May. She has no charisma and just didn't have *it*

How exactly do you propose it's paid for? I keep seeing this as a reason not to vote, but I've yet to read or hear a viable alternative to funding end of life care? If someone can offer an alternative, I'm all ears.

Probably because her policies were complete dogshit. Just a guess.

The voting age is eighteen. Labour and the Lib Dems want it lowered to sixteen because only a child with no life experience could possibly believe that everything being """""free""""" is realistic.

Labour promised good things like improvements to healthcare and job security while the only shit Tories promised were more cuts to everything and fox hunting (why was this even an issue).

People pretend they vote on facts, but really most vote on their gut and pick the facts to suit their biases.

You know who May reminds me of, she's the quiet unpopular girl in school, she won't look anybody in the eye. She's a bit weird, kinda waddles as she walks, back hunched. None of the other girls like her.

Because she's quiet you assume she's smart, so one day you pluck up a bit of courage and go and talk to her...

It turns out she's a fucking idiot

On a deep level, Tory vs. Labour is really Church of England vs. an alliance of Methodism and marginalised Catholicism.

Traditionally, Labour had a lot more to do with Chapel than it had to do with Marx. Americans generally find this dynamic impossible to understand in my experience.

take a fraction of the cash created as part of the quantitative easing scheme and use that

This

Another example. When Jezza talks about pacifism, its read as a sort of extreme modern liberalism. He's actually addressing a strong traditionalist Quaker tendency in his party.

But he's an atheist? Non-conformists are generally pretty happy hearing their views spouted in a secular context in a country with an Established Church.

The problem is they think Labour are a bit like the Democrats but they have very little in common (this was the New Labour experiment in some ways, it didn't last).

Are you seriously this ignorant and heard nothing about Tories' manifesto?

I can see why people believe this, but I prefer the simpler "egotistical woman fucks something up" theory. I bet it comes out in the press that other MPs were begging her to do things differently, backed with opinion poll data, but she decided she knew best. The British Hillary. Her idea to solve terrorism by ...
er, regulating the internet (even more) just screams of not listening to what the public and especially the young voters thought.

can't fault the post, feel like you deserve a (you)
